Agriculture in India relies heavily on irrigation, but many rural areas face unreliable power supply and high fuel costs. Traditional diesel pumps are expensive to run and contribute to air pollution. Solar pumps eliminate dependence on diesel and grid electricity, providing farmers with a consistent and clean energy source for irrigation.

To make solar pumps affordable, the Government of India launched the PM-KUSUM scheme, a flagship renewable energy initiative that subsidizes solar pumps and solar power systems for farmers.

About PM-KUSUM

The PM-KUSUM (Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthan Mahabhiyan) scheme was introduced in 2019 by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE). It aims to:

  • Provide financial assistance for solar pump installations.

  • Promote clean and reliable energy for agriculture.

  • Reduce dependence on diesel and grid electricity.

Farmers who install solar pumps under PM-KUSUM receive subsidies from both central and state governments. Typical subsidy support includes:

  • Approximately 30% central financial assistance (CFA).

  • Additional state government subsidies, which vary by region and policy.

In many states, effective subsidies can reach 60–80% of the pump cost for eligible farmers — especially small and marginal farmers — with the farmer contributing a smaller share directly.

Example Support Figures:

  • Subsidies of around 60% total cost combining central and state contributions are common in many regions.

  • Specific state programs even offer 75% or more subsidies under targeted schemes.

These financial incentives drastically reduce the burden on farmers and accelerate adoption of solar irrigation technologies.

Water Sustainability and Conservation

Solar pumps support more sustainable water use in agriculture:

  • Adjustable flow rates help match water delivery to crop needs, reducing wastage.

  • Solar irrigation systems encourage farmers to adopt efficient water use practices to optimize energy and water availability.

Available Solar Pump Models

Solar pumps are available in various configurations to suit different conditions:

  1. Surface Pumps – Best for shallow water sources like canals, ponds, and open wells. They sit above ground and use solar energy directly.

  2. Submersible Pumps – Installed inside borewells to access deeper groundwater sources. Ideal where water is well below the surface.

Choosing the right model depends on:

  • Borewell depth and water table level.

  • Crop irrigation requirements.

  • Land conditions and energy needs.

Technical Longevity and Maintenance

Solar pumps are designed for durability and minimal upkeep:

  • A typical solar pump system has a lifespan of 20+ years for solar panels.

  • Regular cleaning and occasional checks are usually sufficient to maintain peak performance.

These features make solar pumps a cost-effective and resilient solution compared to traditional systems with recurring fuel and repair costs.
